Sports Premium
PE and Sports Premium
At Kells Lane, we believe that every child deserves a rich, varied and ambitious physical education — and that sport has the power to build confidence, resilience, teamwork and wellbeing alongside physical health.
The Primary PE and Sport Premium is additional government funding provided to primary schools to improve the quality and breadth of PE and sport for all children. At Kells Lane, we invest this funding strategically — ensuring it creates lasting improvements to provision.
We are proud holders of the School Games Mark Gold Award — recognition of the breadth, quality and inclusivity of our sporting offer.
Our PE Lead
PE and sport at Kells Lane is led by Mrs Parker, our PE coordinator, who oversees the curriculum, coordinates our Sports Premium spending and ensures every child has access to high-quality physical education and sporting opportunity throughout their time at Kells Lane.
What Sports Premium funds at Kells Lane
Our Sports Premium is used across five key areas:
• Professional sports coaching at lunchtime: we fund three weekly lunchtime coaching sessions delivered by professional coaches, giving every child access to expert tuition beyond the PE curriculum. Current provision includes NUFC Foundation basketball coaching, futsal coaching and football coaching — all coordinated by Mrs Parker.
• NUFC Foundation partnership: our partnership with the Newcastle United Foundation brings Premier League-quality coaching and aspiration-raising into school. Children benefit from professional coaches who combine sporting excellence with positive role modelling.
• Competitions and fixtures: we fund entry into inter-school competitions, tournaments and sporting events across Gateshead, giving children the experience of competitive sport and the opportunity to represent their school. This includes School Games events, local tournaments and fixtures across a range of sports.
• Staff CPD and professional development: we invest in training and development for our teaching staff, ensuring that the quality of PE teaching in every classroom improves year on year. This creates sustainable impact that outlasts any individual coaching contract.
• School Games Mark: our commitment to the School Games programme — which has earned us Gold Award status — is supported by Sports Premium funding. The School Games Mark recognises schools that demonstrate a commitment to developing sporting opportunities for all young people, particularly the least active.
Our Sports Premium allocation
Our annual Sports Premium allocation is published in our Sports Premium Impact Statement, alongside a full account of how the funding has been spent and the impact it has had on children’s engagement with PE and sport.
We evaluate the impact of our Sports Premium spending carefully, measuring:
• Participation rates — tracking which children access sport and PE, with a particular focus on the least active
• Competition results and participation in School Games events
• Quality of PE teaching — assessed through lesson observation and staff confidence surveys
• Lunchtime and after-school club take-up
• Pupil voice — asking children about their enjoyment of and engagement with sport
Our full impact report is published annually and sets out both the previous year’s outcomes and our priorities for the year ahead.
Sport for every child
We are committed to ensuring that every child — regardless of ability, background or confidence — has a positive experience of physical activity and sport at Kells Lane. Our lunchtime coaching sessions, clubs and curriculum provision are designed to be inclusive and to find something that every child can enjoy and excel at. Children who are less active are specifically supported through our Sports Premium planning — ensuring the funding reaches those who benefit from it most.
