Early Years- Best Start in Life

Advice and support for your child's development

The years before school are when children learn fastest. Talking, playing, reading and singing together every day makes a real difference to how ready your child feels when they start school. Here is where to find help, from pregnancy right through to your child's first day in Reception.

Starting at Kells Lane

Our Nursery welcomes children from the September, January or April after their third birthday. Our youngest children are known as Explorers: Curious, Confident and Cooperative. You can find out about sessions and funded hours on our Nursery Offer page, and see what children learn on our Early Years Curriculum page.

Thinking about Nursery or Reception? Come and see us. Contact the school office on 0191 433 4140 to arrange a visit.

Simple things you can do at home

  • Talk with your child throughout the day, about what you're doing and what you can see.
  • Share a book every day, even for just a few minutes.
  • Sing songs and nursery rhymes together.
  • Encourage your child to dress themselves, use the toilet independently and put on their own coat and shoes.
  • Play games that involve taking turns, sharing and counting.

Best Start in Life

The government's Best Start in Life website has free advice for parents and carers, from pregnancy to starting school.

Gateshead Best Start Family Hubs

Gateshead's Family Hubs offer help with parenting, infant feeding and looking after your own wellbeing. They are also a place to meet health visitors, parent outreach workers and maternity services.

Help with childcare costs

You may be able to get funded hours or help with childcare costs. Check what you're entitled to on Childcare Choices, or ask our school office.
