Science

At Kells Lane, we want every child to think like a scientist. From exploring living things and seasonal change in the Early Years to investigating forces, electricity and the human body in Key Stage 2, our Science curriculum is carefully sequenced to build secure, connected knowledge that grows with every child year on year. Science sits at the heart of our Conservation curriculum driver — helping children understand the natural world, the environmental challenges facing our planet and the scientific thinking they will need to help protect it. We want every child to leave us with a genuine love of Science and the confidence to call themselves a scientist — because that is part of what it means to Find Their Remarkable.

Our teaching is underpinned by the Education Endowment Foundation's guidance for Improving Primary Science, ensuring our approach is evidence-informed and consistently high quality. At the heart of every lesson is working scientifically — children learn Science best by doing it.

Across every year group, children develop skills across five types of enquiry: observing over time, pattern seeking, identifying and classifying, comparative and fair testing, and research using secondary sources.

Practical investigation, scientific vocabulary and real-world connections run through everything — from outdoor exploration in Early Years to cross-curricular links with Geography, Computing and Design & Technology.

We are equally committed to ensuring every child can access and enjoy Science, with carefully scaffolded support for those who find it challenging and rich, extended investigations for those ready to go further.
