Design & Technology
At Kells Lane, Design & Technology is where creativity, problem-solving and practical skill come together. DT gives children the opportunity to design, make and evaluate real, purposeful products for real audiences — developing the resilience, ingenuity and technical confidence that are at the heart of our school vision. Our curriculum is carefully sequenced across five areas — structures, mechanisms, textiles, food and nutrition, and simple electrical systems — building knowledge and skills progressively from Early Years through to Year 6. DT connects closely to our Conservation curriculum driver, encouraging children to think about sustainable materials and responsible design, and to our Communication driver, as children always design with a specific audience and purpose in mind. We want every child to leave Kells Lane knowing that they have the creativity and determination to make things that matter — and that is part of Finding Their Remarkable.
At the heart of every DT unit is the national curriculum's design, make and evaluate cycle. Children begin by researching existing products and the work of real designers, architects, engineers and chefs before designing, making and honestly evaluating their own products against a clear brief.
Food and nutrition is a particular strength of our curriculum, with children cooking a range of dishes, understanding where food comes from and developing practical kitchen skills that will serve them for life. DT also connects naturally across STEM — children apply scientific knowledge, use mathematics for measuring and draw on Computing when working with programmable systems.
We are committed to ensuring every child can access and thrive in DT, with scaffolded support for those who find practical tasks challenging and extended design briefs for those ready to go further.
