Literacy & Language

At Kells Lane, children develop as readers, writers and linguists. In Reading & Phonics, children build the decoding skills and reading fluency to access a rich world of texts and stories — and we are proud that a growing number of our pupils are reaching greater depth in reading, reflecting the strength of our approach and the hard work of our children.

Literacy and Language connects closely to our curriculum driver of Communication, helping children find their voice, listen with purpose and become ambitious, articulate learners. Our work with Voice 21 ensures that oracy — the ability to speak and listen with skill and confidence — runs through everything we do, giving children the spoken language foundations that underpin reading, writing and lifelong communication.

In Writing, children develop the craft of communicating their ideas with skill, precision and flair.

In French, children begin to explore the world beyond English — developing an ear for language, an appreciation of other cultures and the confidence to communicate in a new tongue.

Together, these three strands help every child at Kells Lane to truly Find Their Remarkable.
