Physical Education (PE)

At Kells Lane, we believe that physical education is one of the most important parts of your child's school experience. PE is not just about sport — it is about developing the physical literacy, confidence, resilience and teamwork that will support every child's health and wellbeing throughout their life. We want every child to find a physical activity they love, feel capable and confident in their body and understand that being active is something to enjoy — not endure. Our PE curriculum is carefully sequenced from Nursery through to Year 6, built on the Complete PE programme, and covers the full range of national curriculum activities including games, gymnastics, dance, athletics and outdoor adventurous activities. PE connects directly to our school vision — developing the resilience, ambition and determination that help every child at Kells Lane to Find Their Remarkable.

Across Key Stage 1 and Key Stage 2, children develop their physical skills and sporting knowledge progressively, building on prior learning and growing in confidence and independence as they move through school. Children experience a broad range of sports and physical activities — from invasion games, net and wall games and striking and fielding to gymnastics, dance and athletics — ensuring that every child has the opportunity to discover where their physical remarkable lies. Swimming is taught to all children as part of our PE curriculum, fulfilling the statutory national curriculum requirement and ensuring that every child leaves Kells Lane able to swim competently and safely. Competitive sport is also a valued part of life at Kells Lane — children regularly represent the school in inter-school fixtures, tournaments and sporting events across Gateshead, developing their sportsmanship, teamwork and competitive spirit in a supportive and inclusive environment.

We are proud to invest significantly in the quality of our PE provision through our Sports Premium funding, using it to develop staff expertise, broaden the range of sports and activities on offer and ensure that every child — whatever their ability or background — has access to high-quality physical education.

School Games Mark Gold Award

Our commitment to PE and sport is reflected in our achievement of the School Games Mark Gold Award in 2024-25 — a prestigious government-led award that recognises the strength and breadth of our sporting provision, the range of competitions we enter and the inclusive sporting opportunities we provide for all pupils. We are enormously proud of this achievement and of every child who has represented Kells Lane on the sports field.
