Citizenship

At Kells Lane, we believe that every child is already a citizen — of their school, their community, their country and the world. Citizenship education is about helping children understand what that means, embrace the responsibilities it brings and develop the confidence, knowledge and values to play a positive, active role in the world around them. From learning about democracy and the rule of law to exploring global issues, financial literacy and human rights, our Citizenship curriculum is rich, purposeful and deeply connected to the real world. Citizenship sits at the heart of our Conflict and Culture curriculum drivers — helping children understand how societies are shaped, how conflicts arise and are resolved, how different cultures and communities coexist, and what it means to stand up for what is right. We want every child to leave Kells Lane ready to be a thoughtful, courageous and compassionate citizen — and that is a fundamental part of Finding Their Remarkable.

The Kells Lane Cabinet

One of the things we are most proud of at Kells Lane is our Kells Lane Cabinet — a group of pupil representatives who work directly alongside the Headteacher to help shape and lead aspects of school life. The Cabinet gives children a genuine and meaningful voice in their school community — debating issues, making decisions and taking responsibility for real outcomes that affect their peers. This is democracy in action, not just democracy as a lesson topic. Through the Cabinet, children experience first-hand what it means to represent others, listen carefully to different viewpoints and use their voice to make a positive difference. You can find out more about the Cabinet and its work using the link below.

Rights Respecting School

We are enormously proud to hold Rights Respecting School Gold accreditation — one of the highest recognitions a primary school can achieve for its commitment to children's rights. As a Gold RRSA school, children's rights are not just taught at Kells Lane — they are lived. Children understand their own rights and the rights of others, and this understanding shapes how we treat each other, how we learn together and how we engage with the wider world. We are also proud to be a Smart School Member Advocate, further demonstrating our commitment to global citizenship and responsible engagement with the world beyond our school gates.

Our Citizenship Curriculum

Although Citizenship is non-statutory at primary level, at Kells Lane we are committed to delivering a rich, carefully sequenced Citizenship curriculum from Early Years through to Year 6. Our curriculum is organised around the concept of Global Citizenship — helping children understand their place in an interconnected world and develop the knowledge, skills and values to engage with it responsibly and confidently.

Democracy and Government

Children explore how societies are governed, how decisions are made and how ordinary people can shape the world around them. Highlights include:Year 2 - The history of Flora Drummond & Emmeline Pankhurst: the right to vote for women

Year 4 - The history of democracy and the concept of justice and leadership
Year 6 - Rights and responsibilities in local, national and international contexts

Financial Literacy

We believe that understanding money is an essential life skill. Across our curriculum, children learn what money is for, how to manage it wisely and the difference between needs and wants — giving them the practical knowledge and healthy attitudes towards finances that will serve them throughout their lives.

British Values

Our Citizenship curriculum actively promotes the four fundamental British values — democracy, the rule of law, individual liberty, and mutual respect and tolerance — not as abstract concepts but as living principles that shape how we treat each other and engage with the world every day at Kells Lane.
