Music

At Kells Lane, we believe that music is for every child. It is one of the most joyful, powerful and universal forms of human expression — and we are committed to ensuring that every pupil, from Nursery through to Year 6, experiences the thrill of making, listening to and understanding music in all its richness and diversity. Our Music curriculum is built on the Sing Up programme — a carefully sequenced, progressive framework that develops children's musical knowledge and skills across three interconnected strands: performing, composing and listening and appraising. Music sits at the heart of our Culture curriculum driver, helping children explore and celebrate the extraordinary diversity of musical traditions, genres and styles from around the world — and giving every child the chance to Find Their Remarkable through the unique power of music.

Singing

Singing is central to everything we do in Music at Kells Lane. Through Sing Up, children develop their voices with confidence and skill from the very earliest years, building musical vocabulary, pitch awareness and an appreciation for a wide range of musical styles and traditions as they move through school. Children learn to read and understand musical notation, compose their own pieces and develop their ears as critical, thoughtful listeners — understanding how music is created, how it makes us feel and why it matters. Music is also deeply connected to our wider curriculum — from the rhythms and patterns of Mathematics to the cultural history explored in Humanities — giving children's musical learning real breadth and relevance.

Key Stage 2 Music Tuition

One of the things we are most proud of at Kells Lane is our instrument tuition programme, delivered free of charge to all children by Mr Dunn from Gateshead Music Service. In Years 3 and 4, every child learns to play the ukulele — developing their technical skills, musicianship and confidence as ensemble players. In Years 5 and 6, children progress to guitar tuition, building on the foundations laid in the lower years and developing an increasingly sophisticated understanding of music as performers. This means that by the time children leave Kells Lane, every single one of them has had the opportunity to learn a real instrument — something we believe is an important part of a truly remarkable education.
