Computing

At Kells Lane, we want every child to be a confident, creative and responsible citizen of the digital world. Computing is one of the most relevant and exciting subjects we teach — and in a world where technology shapes almost every aspect of daily life, we believe that understanding how it works, how to use it well and how to stay safe online is an essential part of every child's education. Our Computing curriculum is carefully sequenced from Early Years through to Year 6, built on the Teach Computing curriculum framework, and organised around three interconnected strands that together give children a rich, balanced and progressive experience of the subject. Computing connects closely to our Communication curriculum driver — helping children understand how to communicate responsibly, creatively and effectively in a digital age — and gives every child the tools and confidence to Find Their Remarkable in an increasingly connected world.

Our curriculum is structured around the three strands of the national curriculum for Computing. Computer Science develops children's understanding of how computers and networks work, including programming, algorithms and computational thinking — from simple sequencing activities in Key Stage 1 to more complex coding projects in Key Stage 2. Information Technology develops children's ability to use digital tools creatively and purposefully — creating, organising, presenting and sharing information across a range of platforms and media. Digital Literacy develops children's understanding of how to use technology safely, responsibly and ethically — recognising risks, protecting their privacy, evaluating online information critically and understanding their digital footprint. All three strands are taught progressively across every year group, ensuring that children's knowledge and skills build securely and meaningfully over time.

Online safety is not a separate strand at Kells Lane — it is woven into everything we do in Computing and across the wider curriculum. Children learn to behave respectfully online, protect themselves and others, and make positive, informed choices about how they communicate and share in the digital world. You can find out more about our approach to online safety on our Online Safety page.

We are committed to ensuring that every child can access and thrive in Computing. Children who find the subject challenging receive carefully scaffolded support and adapted tasks to build their confidence and skills. Children who are ready to go further are stretched through more complex programming challenges, extended creative projects and opportunities to apply their computational thinking across other subjects.
